External Wrap, Windows and Doors: The Best Order for a Warmer Home

The order of works affects the final result

External wall insulation, windows, and external doors all meet at the same parts of the house: reveals, cills, thresholds, corners, and service penetrations. If they are planned separately, homeowners can end up with extra cost or awkward detailing.

A practical order for many homes

  1. Start with a home assessment and BER information.
  2. Confirm whether wall and attic insulation need upgrading.
  3. Choose whether windows and doors will be replaced before, during, or after the wrap.
  4. Apply for grants before works begin where required.
  5. Coordinate all opening details before scaffolding and installation.

Current grant context

SEAI currently lists external wall insulation grants up to €8,000. It also lists windows support up to €4,000 and doors support up to €1,600. These figures make it more important to plan the whole envelope, not just one isolated upgrade.

Why homeowners should avoid rushing

Ordering windows or doors before the wall build-up is understood can create reveal, cill, and frame alignment issues. A small amount of planning at the start usually produces a warmer, cleaner, and more durable result.

External Wrap can help homeowners decide the right sequence for insulation, doors, and windows before grant applications and installation dates are locked in.
