External Doors, Draughts and Heat Loss: Why the Door Grant Matters

Do not ignore the external doors

When a home feels cold, homeowners often focus on walls and windows first. External doors deserve the same attention. A poor front or back door can cause draughts, cold surfaces, and heat loss around the frame.

SEAI's current grant information lists door support of up to €1,600, with One Stop Shop grant values showing €800 per external door and a maximum of two doors.

Doors and external wrap detailing

Door thresholds, reveals, frame positions, and sill details all need careful coordination when external wall insulation is being fitted. Good detailing helps reduce thermal bridging and keeps the finished facade neat.

What makes a door upgrade worthwhile

• Better airtightness around the door and frame.
• Improved comfort near hallways and living spaces.
• Less visible draught movement during windy weather.
• A cleaner junction between the new render system and the opening.

Best time to decide

The best time to decide on new external doors is before the wrap is installed. That allows the insulation, trims, weathering, and finish to be designed around the final door frame.
