Do You Need Wall Insulation Before Claiming a Windows and Doors Grant?

Insulation and windows should be planned together

A common question is whether homeowners can replace windows and doors first, then deal with insulation later. For comfort and grant planning, that is not always the best order.

SEAI's windows and doors guidance says homes should have good wall and roof insulation, or should be upgrading insulation before or at the same time as the new windows and doors. The guidance also refers to a Heat Loss Indicator of 2.3 W/Km2 or lower.

Why this rule makes sense

Windows and doors can improve comfort, but if the walls and attic are still losing heat, the home may not perform well enough after the upgrade. Wall insulation reduces the biggest surface heat losses and makes the whole house easier to heat.

External wrap can support eligibility

For homes with solid or poorly performing external walls, external wall insulation may be the upgrade that brings the building fabric closer to the level expected for a windows and doors grant.

What to do before ordering anything

• Check your BER advisory report.
• Confirm the condition of attic and wall insulation.
• Get advice before paying deposits for windows, doors, or external wrap works.
• Wait for the correct grant approval before works begin where SEAI rules require it.

A short assessment can prevent the wrong order of works and avoid details that later need to be undone.
